GARLAND, TX — In a cozy corner of Dead Wax Records, the newly established record store in downtown Garland, I had the opportunity to sit down with local rapper Jenny Lampz. The modern industrial aesthetic of the shop, complete with rows of record bins and a stage in the back, set the perfect backdrop for our conversation.
A Passion for Music, Teaching, and Garland
Jenny is not only a rising star in the music industry, but she is also a kindergarten teacher in the Garland Independent School District (GISD). She shared insights about her dual life. “My students love to dance to my music, but they’re so young, they don’t remember much,” she explained. As they grow older, though, they start to recognize her. “I had a fourth grader say, ‘I saw you on TikTok,’ and I’m like, ‘Cool, what did you see?’”
Incorporating music into her teaching, Jenny has even written songs to help her students remember directions. One memorable song tells the story of a crayon that misses out on a party because it wasn’t put away. “I needed to stop saying that [direction] and just sing it,” she said with the relaxed ease that must come from years of experience teaching small children.
Jenny’s pride in Garland shines through in our conversation. After the interview, she visited the Visit Garland gift shop to snag some Garland merchandise. “I want to perform as a Music Made Here artist in Garland,” she expressed, sharing one of her goals as an artist.
In addition to her music career, Jenny is also pursuing her passion for writing. She is actively looking for an illustrator to collaborate on a children’s book that reflects her experiences and creativity.

Jenny is set to headline the “She Owns the Mic: Volume 1” event on July 5 at Intrinsic Smokehouse Brewery + BBQ Catering. The event promises a celebration of female artistry, featuring Jenny alongside talented artists such as Katiana Castro and Just Ryanne.
