Garland, TX — The Garland Independent School District (GISD) has announced the cancellation of the Secondary Special Olympics Track & Field Meet due to inclement weather. The event was scheduled to take place today, but adverse conditions have prompted this decision to ensure the safety of all participants.
In a post on their Facebook page, GISD stated, “Due to today’s weather, the Secondary Special Olympics Track & Field event has been canceled. The Elementary event scheduled for tomorrow is still planned to proceed as scheduled. We’ll keep families updated if anything changes. Thank you for your support and understanding!”
Further clarification on the GISD website confirms that there will not be a makeup date for the canceled event. The Secondary Special Olympics Track & Field Meet typically provides middle and high school special education students the opportunity to showcase their athletic talents in various events, with training starting at 9 a.m. and opening ceremonies scheduled for around 9:45 a.m.
In previous years, this event has drawn several hundred students eager to participate in friendly competition, featuring activities such as relays, ball and javelin throws, long jumps, and slaloms. Superintendent Ricardo López has often expressed pride in these events, noting the joy and accomplishment they bring to students and families alike.
While today’s meet has been canceled, the Elementary Special Olympics Track & Field event is still set to occur tomorrow, pending any changes due to weather conditions. Families are encouraged to stay tuned for updates regarding any potential adjustments.
