Traffic Update: New I-635 Entrance and Exit Openings

Garland, TX — Beginning Saturday morning, May 10, drivers will see significant improvements at the Garland Avenue intersection along I-635. The permanent eastbound entrance ramp at Garland Avenue will officially open, marking the first of two loop ramps to become available in this area. Additionally, the dedicated eastbound I-635 exit at Garland Avenue will also reopen after a temporary closure that began in early April.

These changes are part of the ongoing LBJ East project, a five-year, $1.7 billion initiative aimed at reconstructing and widening I-635 from U.S. Highway 75 to Interstate 30.

Ongoing Construction Impacts

Despite these openings, motorists should be aware that construction will still impact access to I-635 at nearby intersections. Specifically, the following closures and restrictions remain in effect:

  • Kingsley Road/Walnut Hill Lane: All lanes are closed at I-635 for approximately four months.
  • Miller Road/Royal Lane: The entrance to westbound I-635 is closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. until May 5. Eastbound I-635 exit to Miller/Royal is closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. during the same period.
  • Plano Road: The entrance to westbound I-635 is closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through May 5.

Connector Ramp Closures

The project also affects several connector ramps at the I-30 interchange:

  • Southbound I-635 to I-30: Closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on specified dates through May 5.
  • Westbound I-30 to Northbound I-635: Closed during similar hours on designated nights.
  • Eastbound I-30 to Northbound I-635: Closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on specified dates through May 5.

All closures are subject to weather conditions, and the Texas Department of Transportation will provide regular updates on construction and traffic conditions.

Project Goals

The LBJ East project aims to expand general-purpose lanes and rebuild existing tolled managed lanes, resulting in a total of 10 general-purpose lanes and two tolled managed lanes upon completion. The project will also introduce continuous frontage roads and numerous intersection improvements.

Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about the ongoing construction and to plan their routes accordingly as these important traffic updates are implemented.
