Recycling Refresher: What Is Recyclable and Where?

Garland, TX – For residents of Garland, the City offers recycling curbside, and additional recycling options are available at the Sanitation Department’s facilities. Many residents may unknowingly place non-recyclable or non-curbside-appropriate items in their blue recycling bins, potentially leading to contamination and inefficiencies in the recycling process. Certain items that residents often think are recyclable can cause significant issues at recycling facilities. Hoses, ropes, hangers, and H-stakes are among the top offenders. These materials can tangle and clog the machinery used in the recycling process, disrupting operations and increasing costs.

In addition to these commonly misidentified items, the following materials are also not accepted in the blue recycling cart:

  • Plastic bags (which should be returned to retail)
  • Chains
  • Ropes
  • Wires
  • Batteries (which should also be returned to retail)
  • Liquid
  • Diapers
  • Food
  • To-go containers
  • Styrofoam
  • Grass clippings, leaves, brush, or wood
  • Clothing, textiles, or shoes
  • Toys
  • Hardcover books

Residents are encouraged to focus on what can be recycled to ensure efficient processing. Acceptable materials for the blue recycling bin include:

  • Aluminum, steel, and tin cans
  • Food and beverage cartons
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Paper, newspaper, magazines, and flattened cardboard
  • Plastic bottles, containers, and jugs labeled #1 – #5 and #7
