Parents Upset Over Decision to Cut AVID Program at Jackson Technology for Math and Science Middle School

Garland, TX — The recent decision by Garland Independent School District (GISD) to cut the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program at Jackson Technology for Math and Science Middle School has left many parents and students disheartened. Parents are voicing their concerns, with one parent stating, “This makes me sad. My 8th grader has learned and developed so many useful skills with Ms. Adams.”

The AVID program has been instrumental in supporting students who show potential for success in college and advanced coursework but may lack the necessary resources or guidance. It focuses on building critical academic skills, fostering self-advocacy, and preparing students for future educational opportunities. The program emphasizes writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading—known as WICOR—AVID has helped many students gain confidence and improve their academic performance.

Since its inception, AVID has provided invaluable resources such as tutoring, mentorship, and college exploration activities outside of regular classroom hours. It has been particularly beneficial for students who are historically underserved and may be the first in their families to attend college.

Parents are particularly concerned about the impact this cut will have on their children’s future. The loss of this program means that students will miss out on the support and skills that AVID offers, including guidance on taking Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes, as well as assistance with college admissions processes.

The decision comes amid ongoing discussions about educational funding and program prioritization within GISD. Cuts are being made due to funding challenges, including no campus funding increases since 2019, which has forced the district and campuses to make some tough decisions. Parents are calling for the district to reconsider, emphasizing that the AVID program not only enhances academic readiness but also fosters a growth mindset and critical life skills. Other parents are urging the community to call their Texas Senators about a school funding bill that is on the table to ensure public schools are properly funded. The potential benefits of the AVID program can change lives, and parents hope that the district will recognize its significance and impact on the students of Jackson Technology for Math and Science Middle School.
