GARLAND, TX — Matthew Banks, a talented musician and private instructor, has made an impact in the Garland community through his music and advocacy for public transit. Born and raised in Garland, Banks has experienced firsthand how the DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) system has opened doors to artistic exploration and cultural experiences.

Banks credits the arrival of the DART light rail in Garland as a transformative moment in his artistic journey. He fondly recalled how DART became his ticket to adventure, opening the doors to the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Zoo, and other cultural landmarks. This newfound accessibility allowed him to dive into the vibrant arts scene beyond his hometown, fueling his passion for music and creativity. With enthusiasm, he shared his dream of touring on Amtrak’s Texas Eagle, envisioning himself performing at each stop along the way and spreading his love for music across the country.
When Banks travels longer distances with DART, he often also has his cargo bike, capable of hauling an extra 100 pounds of gear. He carries his instruments, speakers, whatever he needs to make his show a reality, and he does it all without a personal vehicle. As a DART rider from Garland, Banks believes that the city should vocalize its commitment to fully funding the transit system, recognizing its importance in connecting the community and enhancing access to the arts.
Matthew Banks has been deeply involved with the City of Garland. He has performed as a Music Made Here artist and frequently played at local venues on the square. During the pandemic, he adapted by livestreaming performances from Intrinsic for several consecutive Thursdays. Last summer, he participated in two musicals at the Granville Arts Center, expressing his excitement about the venue’s upcoming renovations.
He is also set to perform at ClarinetFest® 2025 in Fort Worth on July 10, where he will be featured among several artists in the Daytime Headlining Programs. Banks is proficient in five primary instrument families, including flute, oboe, saxophone, clarinet, and bassoon. Although a generalist, Banks considers himself a clarinetist first — a clarinetist who can switch between multiple instruments in a single musical.
Reflecting on his time performing on the square, Banks recalled switching to children’s songs to engage the kids playing nearby, enjoying their reactions. He expressed a desire to see more live music throughout Garland, emphasizing that while the square is a great venue, there is much more to the city that deserves attention. Banks’ connection to Garland runs deep; his mother moved here in 1992, drawn by the promise of the rail line. He attended Garland High School and participated in the marching band, where he honed his musical skills.
Banks brings a distinctive sound to his music, characterized by his low, jazzy voice that perfectly complements his extensive talents across the woodwinds. His performances resonate with a rich, soulful quality that captivates audiences. One of his favorite venues is the Scat Jazz Lounge in downtown Fort Worth, nestled off Sundance Square. This intimate basement club is one of the only exclusively jazz clubs in the DFW area, allowing Banks to connect with both the music and his listeners in a unique atmosphere that embodies the genre’s spirit.
Matthew Banks is a multi-talented professional musician dedicated to enriching the cultural landscape of Garland and its residents. His efforts to cultivate a more connected arts scene serve as a reminder of the transformative power of creativity and collaboration in shaping a brighter future for the community.
