GARLAND, TX — Alexa Garcia, a senior at Rowlett High School and a standout student at the Gilbreath-Reed Career and Technical Center (GRCTC), is gearing up for the national SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta this June. Recently crowned the first female state champion in Motorcycle Service Technology at the Texas Leadership and Skills Conference, Alexa is now facing a crucial challenge: she must transition her skills from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to Yamaha bikes, the focus of the upcoming competition.
With her impressive achievement at the state level, Alexa has become a role model for young women in a traditionally male-dominated field. Her journey began when she enrolled in the Outdoor Power class at GRCTC, where she quickly discovered her passion for motorcycle service. “I was nervous going into the state competition, especially being the only girl there,” she reflected. “But when I found out I won, I was so proud. It just proved that all the hard work was worth it.”

As the national competition approaches, Alexa’s mother took to Facebook to seek community support. “WE NEED YOUR HELP! My daughter Alexa recently made history by winning 1st place in SkillsUSA Motorcycle Service Technology—the first young woman to qualify for nationals!” she wrote. The post highlighted the urgency of finding a local Yamaha shop willing to offer Alexa the opportunity to practice and learn on their equipment.
“I’m extremely dedicated, responsible, and respectful,” Alexa expressed, emphasizing her eagerness to gain hands-on experience with Yamaha motorcycles. The support from her community has been heartwarming, with many rallying around her quest to prepare for the national stage.
To make this dream a reality, Alexa is actively seeking a local Yamaha shop that can provide her with the resources and mentorship necessary to refine her skills. As she embarks on this next step, her determination and passion for motorcycle service continue to inspire those around her.
With the national competition just weeks away, the community is encouraged to reach out if they know of any Yamaha shops that could assist Alexa in her preparation. Together, they can help her shine at nationals and pave the way for greater representation in the field of motorcycle service.
